Donkey Calf Raise
Don’t let the comical appearance fool you – this is one very effective movement for building calf strength. Its principal advantage over the regular standing calf exercise is that simply bending forward at the hip with the knees locked automatically pre-stresses the calf (try it!). And the calves are tough dense muscles capable of great force; when you consider that a one-mile run subjects each of them to thousands of repetitions with bodyweight multiplied by G-force, it becomes apparent that they need to be trained with significant resistance to stimulate change – it’s not unusual at all, once you’ve become practiced at this movement, to perform it with TWO partners straddling the hips. Do slow, full-range repetitions.
